The Queen's Medical Center

The Queen’s Medical Center – Manamana and The Queen’s Medical Center – West O‘ahu attained Magnet® recognition again– the highest institutional honor for hospital excellence – from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

“The Queen’s Medical Center is honored and humbled to receive this very prestigious international recognition,” said Jason Chang, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Queen’s Health Systems.  “I want to thank our nurses and entire team for their commitment to striving for the very highest standards of excellence for the people of Hawai‘i.”

Receiving Magnet® recognition is one of the highest achievements a hospital can attain.  Magnet® recognition is held by less than ten percent of hospitals in the United States.  The Queen’s Medical Center is the first and only hospital in Hawai‘i to achieve Magnet® recognition. It is Queen’s 4th consecutive recognition, which also includes Queen’s ambulatory clinics for the first time.

Magnet® organizations are recognized for superior nursing processes and patient care, which lead to the highest levels of safety, quality, and satisfaction among nurses and patients alike. A hospital must undergo a rigorous review process demonstrating they are committed to sustaining nursing excellence, improving professional practice, and transforming the culture of a work environment to provide quality patient care.

“Magnet® recognizes nursing excellence, but it truly recognizes the excellent work that is being done throughout The Queen’s Medical Center,” said Linda Puu, RN, Chief Nursing Executive for The Queen’s Health Systems.  “Every one of our employees from every department in the hospital works together as a team to provide the best healthcare we can for the people of Hawai‘i.”

Magnet Recognition Program® was created after a 1983 study by the American Academy of Nursing revealed that certain hospitals had exceptional staff retention rates, high job satisfaction and a high level of patient satisfaction. After analyzing their data, the researchers came up with “14 Forces of Magnetism” that characterized these exceptional hospitals.

Each Force sets the standard of performance in areas that will cause a health care institution to perform at a standard of excellence like no other.  The 14 Forces are grouped into essential elements to deliver superior patient care.  These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.

The ANCC calls Magnet® recognition a “seal of approval for quality because a Magnet® hospital must have superior patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.”
The Queen’s Medical Center was founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawai‘i.  It is currently the largest private hospital in Hawai‘i and leading medical referral center in the Pacific Basin.  For more information about The Queen’s Medical Center, please visit www.queens.org.
