Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer
Dr. Todd Allen is Senior Vice President and the Chief Quality Officer at The Queen’s Health Systems (QHS).
Dr. Allen oversees the Quality & Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, CORE and Infection Control departments. He is responsible for designing and promoting the advancement of superior quality and patient safety initiatives across the health system through continuous performance improvement, utilization of evidence based clinical protocols to drive outcomes, and optimizing the care experience of patients. He also oversees the Center for Quality and Patient Safety, which is responsible for two major initiatives at QHS, including Journey to High Reliability and the function of the system’s Clinical Program structure.
Additionally, Dr. Allen represents QHS in maturing community partnerships with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, the State of Hawaii Department of Health, HMSA, and other Payers to elevate patient quality and safety to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawaii.
Before joining Queen’s, Dr. Allen served as the Senior Executive Medical Director for the Intermountain’s Healthcare Delivery Institute based in Salt Lake City, Utah. There he directed efforts in process improvement in clinical medicine, systems research, and teaching in Intermountain’s Advanced Training Programs. He was also the most recent Medical Director of the Emergency Department Development Team which supervised the work of the 21 emergency departments across the breadth of Intermountain Healthcare’s hospitals.
On top of Dr. Allen’s current role at Queen’s, he also served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine and held an appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Emergency Medicine of Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Allen has been directly involved in research and improvement since 1999 when he was appointed as the first Director of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine and Division of Trauma at LDS Hospital and Intermountain Medical Center. He has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and numerous other abstracts.
Dr. Allen received his Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
He is married and a parent to four terrific children and now is blessed to call Hawai’i home.
