Residencies and Fellowships for Physicians

The Queen’s Medical Center is partnered with the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) for the education of medical students, residents and fellows.

The collaborating Residency Program plays a vital role in supporting the Queen’s Clinical Integrated Physician Network (QCIPN) to train future primary care physicians and retain them within The Queen’s Health Systems.  Established in 1992, the affiliation works to recruit, retain, and produce high quality physicians within medicine that desire to stay and practice in Hawaii.

The JABSOM DOM Residency Program is an important part of the primary care physician training pipeline to alleviate the state’s Primary Care shortage, give greater access to patients, and serve as a foundation for integrated clinical care, training, and research. Internal Medicine Residents practice at the Queen Emma Clinics, caring for a range of patients including the homeless, mentally ill, Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants, and Native Hawaiians. The Queen Emma Clinics patient population has extreme diversity in socio-economic status and medical diagnostics, which provides Residents with meaningful training experience.

There are many residency/fellowship training programs at The Queen’s Medical Center, with some participants rotating to other Queen’s hospitals. For example, Surgery offers rotations at Queen’s-West Oahu and North Hawaii Community Hospital, and Cardiovascular offers rotations at Queen’s-West Oahu.

Our partnership has achieved and sustained outcomes including a 90% pass rate for board certification of residency graduates and maintenance of the maximum term of accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Data from JABSOM demonstrates that approximately 80% of JABSOM graduates with residency training in Hawaii remain here to practice. Additionally, many former graduates with mainland fellowships return to Hawaii to practice at Queen’s.
