The Medical-Surgical Unit at Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital provides quality care for patients admitted to the hospital due to a wide variety of illnesses and injuries, or to recover from a surgical procedure. Our Medical-Surgical Unit is focused on patient safety and satisfaction, and high quality care through a unique patient-centered model of care.
Patient care is provided to all ages and is focused not only on the patient but incorporates the ohana (family) as well. Our dedicated staff recognizes that family members are an important part of our patients’ healing process. We welcome the involvement of the patient’s family to provide care and support throughout all aspects of their loved one’s stay with us.
When you are admitted, a hospitalist on our staff will be your attending physician. Your hospitalist will be in contact with your primary care physician and will work closely with any specialists, consulting physicians, case managers, social workers or other medical providers who may be involved in your care. Our hospitalists lead the care team to ensure that you receive the highest quality care while you are in the hospital.
A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients during their stay in the hospital. The hospitalist’s primary focus is the patient from the time of their admission until the patient leaves the hospital. The hospitalist reviews a new patient’s past medical records, consults with primary care physicians, and performs a comprehensive history and physical examination when a patient is admitted. The hospitalist coordinates medical care while patients are admitted and is available to spend time with the patient and their family to discuss the patient’s care. The hospitalist also works with nurses, case managers, and other physicians to design and coordinate an individual treatment plan for each patient.
We have several hospitalists on staff, which means patients may have more than one hospitalist manage their care during their stay. Hospitalists do not have a medical practice outside the hospital and focus solely on caring for patients admitted to the hospital.
Throughout a patient’s hospital stay, a hospitalist is available to each patient and their family as needed. He or she will discuss the plan of care with the patient and can provide further explanation to answer any questions regarding the care plan. The average length of stay for a hospitalized patient can be significantly lessened when care is managed and coordinated by the hospitalist team.
With hospitalist coverage 24 hours a day, there is continuous oversight of care. If you need to speak to a hospitalist, simply ask one of our nurses to page him or her.
The hospitalist is in charge of a patient’s care while in the hospital, but the patient’s primary care provider is welcome to check on his or her patient and discuss the patient’s care with the hospitalist during their stay. All pertinent information regarding a patient’s hospital stay will be shared with his or her primary care provider.
After patients are discharged, follow-up care should be discussed with their primary care physician regarding any further medical needs. If a patient does not have a primary care provider, the hospitalist will refer the patient to a physician on the medical staff for follow-up and subsequent medical care.
A hospitalist’s focus is on patients admitted to The Community Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital. These physicians are able to:
Your hospitalist will check in with you daily and work closely with you to care for you during your hospitalization. It is important to ask questions or voice concerns about your health care. If you need to speak with your hospitalist, simply ask a nurse or call the hospital operator. At night, a hospitalist is on-call within the hospital to respond to any urgent issues.
When it is determined that you are ready to be discharged, your primary care physician will be updated on your progress and discharge plan. Before returning home, our case managers and social workers can help to schedule a follow-up appointment with your primary care physician and assist with other needs.
During your stay, your hospitalist is partnered with a case manager and they collaborate to ensure that your plan of care and discharge from the hospital runs smoothly. This eases your transition back to your daily home lifestyle and improves your continuity of care after you leave the hospital.
To help support the healing process for your loved ones, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the following guidelines, which allow us to provide safe, high-quality care.
Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital has the right to escort loud, unruly, or combative visitors out of the hospital. Visitors who do not follow the hospital policies and procedures will also be escorted out.
In the event of an emergency, all visitors will be required to leave. Your cooperation is critical and appreciated.
All meals are provided by the hospital; however, outside food can be brought to patients. Please check with the patient’s nurse to find out if he or she is on a special diet before giving any outside food.
While you are waiting, we encourage you to use the ohana (family) waiting rooms located throughout the hospital.
Due to confidentiality laws, staff members are not allowed to release any information about a patient without the patient’s permission. For large families, please appoint one person to act as a point of contact. With permission from the patient, this person will be given information to share with the family.
Rest is critical for patient healing and recovery. Please limit phone calls to patient rooms during nighttime hours so that our patients can rest. After visiting hours, it is best to call the main nurses station at 808-881-4790 in case the patient is asleep or does not want to be disturbed.
Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not allowed inside our facility or anywhere on the hospital grounds.
To help us maintain a safe, quiet, healing environment, children who are visiting must be accompanied by an adult at all times. In addition, hallways must be kept clear.
Visiting hours for the Medical- Surgical Unit are from 8:30 am – 8:30 pm (subject to change). Security doors in certain parts of the hospital are closed and alarmed after 9 pm. Walking the hallways is not allowed after 9 pm. If you need to stay past visiting hours, please check with the nurse in charge of the unit and a name tag will be issued to you. The name tag must be worn at all times during after-hours visitation.
Overnight visitation is kept to a minimum. With prior approval from the unit supervisor, one adult may spend the night with an adult patient based on specific patient needs. One adult family member is encouraged to stay with pediatric patients. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed to stay overnight.
