Early Detection is Key

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., but most of these cases could have been prevented with regular colonoscopy screenings. Up to 90% of cancers are caught by screening.

No other screening tool is as effective as a colonoscopy, and it does not need to be repeated for 5 to 10 years, depending on the results. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), colon cancer screening should be done beginning at age 50. If there are other factors involved, such as a strong family history of colon cancer or polyps, or if you have had inflammatory bowel disease or polyps, screening should be done earlier.
