HONOLULU – The Queen’s Health System today announced the selection of Dr. Jill Hoggard Green as the statewide system’s new president and chief executive officer. A nationally acclaimed and highly-respected health care leader with 39 years of experience, Dr. Hoggard Green will join Queen’s in October of 2019, succeeding Art Ushijima.

“Jill will continue the exemplary leadership that has been at the heart of Queen’s since its founding by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV 160 years ago,” said Jenai Wall, chair of the board of trustees of The Queen’s Health System. “Not only is she a caring and compassionate leader, but she has achieved recognition and success through her dedication to clinical excellence, commitment to staff development and devotion to the mission of each organization she serves.”

Dr. Hoggard Green is currently president of Mission Hospital and served as chief operating officer of Mission Health in Asheville, North Carolina from 2011 until it was acquired by HCA Healthcare in February of this year. She has been recognized as one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Chief Operating Officers (2018) and Becker’s Top 130 Women Leaders in Healthcare (2016-2018).

Hoggard Green’s appointment is the result of a comprehensive nation-wide search that commenced last fall when Art Ushijima announced his upcoming retirement. Guided by respected global executive search firm Korn Ferry, a committee appointed by the board of trustees of The Queen’s Health System selected Hoggard Green as the organization’s next CEO based on her outstanding accomplishments and experience, exemplary leadership skills, proven success at improving quality of care, and deep appreciation for the Queen’s mission.

“I am humbled by the critical needs The Queen’s Health System serves within communities throughout the islands,” said Dr. Jill Hoggard Green. “Together, we plan to continue advancing Queen’s good work, supporting clinical excellence through our physicians, offering resources to further develop our staff, and most importantly, delivering quality care to our patients in service of our founder’s mission.”

Mission Health is a $2 billion, 12,000 employee health system comprised of six hospitals, including a 770-bed teaching hospital, multiple ambulatory care facilities, an 800+ provider group practice, a $100+ million post-acute provider, a health plan and related services. In 2018, for a remarkable six times in seven years (2012-2018), Mission Health was named one of the nation’s Top 15 Health Systems by IBM Watson Health.

Hoggard Green’s accomplishments at Mission Health include:

  • Doubled revenue and income while markedly expanding ambulatory services.
  • Dramatically improved physician relations and developed a 1,200+ provider clinically integrated network comprised of a majority of independent physicians.
  • Reduced overall mortality by more than 40%, improving from the 75th to above the 95th percentile.
  • Improved patient experience from 55th to 90th percentile over three years.
  • Improved employee engagement to more than double the national benchmark.

Prior to joining Mission Health, Hoggard Green served as chief operating officer of the Oregon Region of Peace Health, which included four hospitals, over 600 medical staff members, over 200 employed clinicians, and 4,500 caregivers. She also spent more than 15 years at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah, a nationally recognized, vertically integrated not-for-profit health system. A registered nurse whose career includes work with oncology, bone marrow transplant units, and hospice programs and at leading hospitals, ambulatory and home health services in Utah, Oregon and North Carolina, Hoggard Green has dedicated her life to improving patient care.

Art Ushijima, The Queen’s Health System’s current president and chief executive officer, will work closely with Hoggard Green to ensure a smooth transition and will hold the title of advisor to the CEO until his retirement in January 2020 after 30 years of dedicated service to the Queen’s mission and the successful growth of the health system.

The Queen’s Health System board of trustees, Ushijima and Hoggard Green are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and seamless service to the Hawaii community. The organization looks forward to honoring Ushijima and welcoming its next leader as it continues its longstanding commitment to its mission of fulfilling the intent of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawaii.
